The last weekend of January saw the first official Cape Town Motor Show (CTMS) finally hitting the Mother City - and boy, did it certainly prove to all and sundry that Capetonians love their engines, be it on two wheels, four, eight or more; vintage, pimped or brand-spanking new. They came in their droves, so much so that the organisers had to open the entrance area early on both the Saturday and Sunday.
On a day when many might have been thinking about the races (the new Sun Met took place on the same Saturday), it proved that horsepower trumps horse racing; an incredible footfall of 21 450 people clicked through the turnstiles of the Sun GrandWest over the weekend of the first CTMS.
“We could not be happier with the turnout!” exclaimed marketing director, Garth Rhoda. “After years of meticulous planning, one always hopes for the best, but you never really know the outcome until you are actually in the thick of it - and Capetonians thankfully proved us right. The numbers don’t lie, and they prove that people have been crying out for a local show like this and they certainly let us know it was appreciated.”
The local newspapers all ran features the following Monday, with front-page coverage; the Cape Argus announced emphatically, “Cape Town Motor Show is a hit."
The CTMS was officially opened on Friday, January 27 by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Madam Mayor Patricia de Lille, along with the Chairman of Cape Town Tourism, Enver Mally, in front of a score of schoolkids from Elsies River, specially bused in for the occasion compliments of Golden Arrow; needless to say, they were delighted with their first motor show experience. Cheques were presented to the mayor for the City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Services and the Manenberg Upliftment Project, while TV crews, media and trade looked on.
“As a show being produced by Capetonians for Capetonians, and with the fantastic support that the City of Cape Town has given us since we proposed this idea, and all the way to fruition, we wanted to give something back," said media spokesperson, Robbie Stammers.
The show spanned the length and breadth of Sun GrandWest, including the Market Hall, Grand Arena, the Sun Exhibit area, the Sun Park with an outdoor 4X4 area, an incredibly popular drifting zone run by the internationally celebrated drift racer Mikey Skelton, the Bike Zone, and Classic and Vintage car displays. There was something for everyone.
“We are so pleased for the CTMS team! So much hard work went into this event and the public responded in large numbers, which is so gratifying to see. Their team can be exceptionally proud, and it is now another great event for the City of Cape Town to add to the calendar,” said Mervyn Naidoo, CEO of Sun GrandWest.
A person who is no stranger to motor shows and motoring in general, Brandon Maary, producer of Ignition Live TV who was filming and interviewing people at the CTMS for the entire weekend, had this to say: "The Cape Town Motor Show has definitely ticked all the right boxes in making this a world-class event. Amazing cars and bikes matched with great entertainment ensured a fun day out for any family who has petrol in their veins. We are so looking forward to what 2018 has to offer!"
It appears, however, that revellers didn’t simply come in their numbers to ogle the beauties on show, but left with purchases to the tune of over R50 million in trade. Just ask Shelby SA CEO Peter Lindenberg: “Shelby decided to support the CTMS purely for awareness, and this we definitely achieved. However, we sold a 50th Anniversary SuperSnake to boot, plus have a few more very good prospects.”
To add to this, Marc Alperstein from Performance Detail reported back: “Within the first three hours of gates opening on Saturday, we smashed our sales record for any motor event that we have been to - and then beat it again on the Sunday! Myself and my staff have been on a high since!”
Jeff Osborne, who heads up Gumtree Auto ZA, said: “We were thrilled by the massive public support as well as the motor industry participation in the inaugural Cape Town Motor Show. It reflects the demand for this type of event, and bodes well for the future growth and success of the show. As a key sponsor, Gumtree was very pleased with the broadband exposure and the goodwill generated through participation." One lucky lady left the CTMS on the Sunday with her own Harley-Davidson sponsored by Gumtree and was the winner out of 12 000 entries.
So there you have it. It clearly demonstrates that Cape Town is not a sleepy coastal village after all, and is a clear indication of how much this type of show is needed and desired, with major benefits for patrons and show participants alike.
“It perhaps sounds silly, but our analogy was always internally compared to the famous words about Rome,” says operations director, George Sharp. “Build it and they will come!”
And did they ever. The CTMS now knows it has a market, and reaps benefits for all. The team is now pumped to do even bigger and better things in 2018. Lights. Camera. Traction! Watch this space in 2018!”
